Coultershaw Wharf and Beam Pump

The beam pump at Coultershaw Wharf is one of those Victorian engineering surprises that makes you stop and think about how people actually solved problems before electricity. The mechanism is genuinely clever: water from the river powers an enormous wooden beam that once supplied the local area with drinking water. Walkers will find it a natural stop on a longer route along the river - it's accessible, free to view from outside, and gives you a proper sense of how industrial this corner of Sussex once was. It's not a two-hour destination by itself, but combined with a wander through Petworth Park or the Rother Valley, it slots in perfectly. The site's compact enough that kids won't get restless, though they'll only stay interested if they like that sort of Victorian machinery. The beam pump has real character - weathered brick, the sound of water and wood working, genuine history without the gift shop.

Stay at Graffham Camping just down the road and you've got brilliant access to this stretch of the Rother. Best time to visit is autumn - the valley's moody, the light's lovely, and there aren't school groups everywhere.
