You stand there as it clanks and groans into action, all iron and engineering, and you get a proper sense of how this place kept the local area supplied before mains water arrived.

It's the kind of thing that grabs engineering enthusiasts and anyone keen on industrial heritage. Kids find it oddly satisfying too, though it's not a full afternoon's entertainment - maybe forty minutes if you're thorough. The setting helps: Petworth's just down the road, which means you can combine it with wandering the estate and market town without faffing about.

Assuming it's free (opening hours aren't widely advertised online, so ring ahead), it slots nicely into a weekend exploring the South Downs. If you're camping at Woodfire at Westerlands or the Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site, both within two miles, you've got easy access. Wakestone & Wild Glamping is a touch further out but still reasonable. The pump's genuinely worth a detour if you're staying locally, though I wouldn't recommend driving an hour specifically for it. Fair point though - it's one of those places that rewards turning up and discovering.
