Cors Ian

Cors Ian is a sprawling wetland reserve just outside Aberystwyth, and it's exactly the kind of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a quick dash through. The landscape opens up around you - reed beds, open water, and patches of scrubby woodland that look different depending on the season and light. Birdwatchers absolutely love it here. You'll spot lapwings, curlews, and if you're lucky, hen harriers cutting across the marsh. Winter brings its own visitors; the numbers swell considerably when conditions elsewhere become harsher.

Walking the perimeter trails takes a good hour or so at a leisurely pace. The paths themselves are straightforward enough, though they can get boggy after rain - wellies a sensible shout. There's something genuinely meditative about being out here away from the seafront bustle of Aberystwyth. It's free to visit and genuinely feels like untouched country.

Families with older kids who don't mind standing still for bird spotting will find real value here. Younger children might lose interest faster unless they're into insects or spotting waterfowl. The reserve works brilliantly as a quieter counterpoint to a glamping trip - stay at Dôl Swynol or Brynllwyd nearby and spend an afternoon here before heading to the beach or the town. Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light and the most active wildlife. It's proper wild Wales without needing to travel far from civilisation.
