Copperheap Hill

The walk up Copperheap Hill from Keswick is a proper leg-stretcher without being a full day's commitment. You're looking at a modest peak by Lake District standards, but that's rather the point - it's steep enough to feel like you've earned the effort, gentle enough that you won't be cursing it halfway up. The views back towards Keswick and across Derwentwater make the climb worthwhile, particularly on a clear day when you can pick out the larger peaks beyond. On misty days it's less impressive, frankly.

Family groups with children aged eight or older will manage it fine. Younger kids might find the ascent tedious unless they're mountain-hardened already. The real draw here is that it doesn't demand three hours of your holiday time - allow 90 minutes return and you're done. Walkers wanting a gentle afternoon rather than a full expedition will appreciate the relative quiet too; it's nowhere near as busy as some of the honeypot routes.

Since it's within comfortable reach of both Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club (just over a mile away) and Castlerigg Hall's glamping pitches, it makes sense as a morning walk before lunch in town. Start early if you're pitching at Threlkeld Hall further out - the drive's only ten minutes or so. There's no admission fee, no facilities at the summit, so pack water and a snack. Best visited between May and September when the weather's more stable. It won't wow you like Skiddaw or Catbells will, but it's a solid, confidence-building hill if you're easing into the Lake District.
