Con Hill

Con Hill's not particularly high - barely 300 metres - but it punches above its weight. The walk from Carnforth is straightforward enough, taking you through proper Lakeland fringe country with decent views across Morecambe Bay and towards the Bowland Fells. You'll get your legs warmed up on the approach, then a final push gets you to the summit where the prospect opens right out.

It's the kind of fell that works well for families who fancy something more adventurous than a park stroll but aren't ready for the full-day schlep up Helvellyn. The terrain's forgiving, and on a clear day you can pick out Pendle Hill to the south and the Lake District proper stretching away to the north. Allow a couple of hours up and back if you're moving at a steady pace.

Going midweek keeps the top pleasantly quiet, though weekend crowds from Carnforth rarely feel oppressive. The nearby glamping options at Hidden Hills and Wonderland Retreats sit just under three miles away, so it's an easy drive then walk if you're based there. Fell End Holiday Park, a bit further out, also works as a jumping-off point for anyone wanting to explore this quieter corner of the region. The walk itself is free - no gates, no fees - though you'll want sensible boots and to check conditions before heading out in winter.
