High Grasses Wood

Walking into High Grasses Wood near Carnforth feels properly different from the manicured country estates scattered across Lancashire. The woodland here is working woodland - mixed broadleaf and conifer, the sort of place where you notice how light filters through at different angles depending on what's growing overhead. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, just paths threading through and the occasional sound of saws in the distance reminding you this isn't a museum piece.

It's ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Hidden Hills or Primrose Pods are both close by - and you fancy a proper walk without the tourist machinery. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage the terrain fine, though younger children might find the distances a bit much. Walkers get the most from it; you can spend a solid hour or two depending on which routes you take, and the woodland provides decent shelter if the weather's doing that Lancashire drizzle thing.

I'd suggest going mid-week if possible. Weekends tend to draw more people, and part of the appeal here is having space to move without dodging other walkers every five minutes. The wood changes noticeably through seasons - spring brings wild garlic and blossom, autumn is predictably golden. Free to access, which is refreshing. Allow at least two hours if you're doing a proper circuit, longer if you're just wandering without a plan. Before or after, Carnforth's only a few miles for lunch or supplies.
