Coldside Hill

The walk up Coldside Hill rewards you with proper views across the Cheviot Hills - that rolling, windswept landscape that defines this corner of Northumberland. It's not a dramatic peak, but it's steep enough to feel like you've earned the effort by the time you reach the top near Wooler.

What you get is straightforward: good visibility on a clear day (and there aren't always clear days up here), a sense of real wildness, and the kind of peace you only find when you've climbed away from the car parks. The terrain is moorland and grass - manageable for reasonably fit walkers, though the wind can catch you off-guard. Allow a couple of hours return depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

This suits walkers far more than casual strollers. Kids with energy will enjoy the climb, but the rewards are views rather than features, so very small children might find it a bit pointless. Weather matters massively - come on a grey day and you'll see about fifty metres in any direction.

Coldside Hill sits well within a broader Cheviot walking itinerary. Highburn House Caravan Park, just 5.4 miles away, makes a logical base for tackling several peaks in the area without moving pitch. Riverside Wooler Holiday Park is marginally further but also accessible. Both put you within reach of harder hills if you want to build up the walking over a few days. It's the sort of place where you're not coming for one specific attraction - you're coming for the walking itself.
