Coldburn Hill

The walk up Coldburn Hill rewards you with views across the Cheviot Hills that stretch for miles in every direction. It's not particularly high - around 420 metres - but the exposed moorland means there's proper wind up there, and the visibility on a clear day is genuinely excellent.

You'll approach this as a straightforward fell walk from Wooler, which sits just a few miles south. The ascent is steady rather than brutal, taking most people somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour depending on fitness. Walkers will appreciate the openness of it all - no cramped woodland, just rolling heather and grass with those wide Cheviot vistas constantly pulling your eye northward.

Families with teenagers keen on easy peaks will find this manageable and worth the effort. Younger children might struggle with the distance and exposure, especially if the weather turns. Allow at least two hours for the round trip if you want to linger at the top.

There's nothing officially managed about it - no visitor centre, no facilities at the summit. It's free, obviously, and you can walk it any day of the year, though autumn and early summer tend to be kindest for weather. Coldburn Hill fits neatly into a broader Cheviot exploration from either Highburn House or Riverside Wooler if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby. Pair it with a walk around Wooler itself and you've got a solid day out.
