Coldberry Hill

There's a decent walk up Coldberry Hill if you're based around Wooler and fancy something a bit different from the usual Cheviot suspects. The summit's nothing spectacular - you're looking at moorland views stretching towards the borders, with the Cheviots rising up behind you if the weather plays ball. On a clear day it's properly worth the leg work. On a grey one, frankly, you might wonder why you bothered.

The climb itself takes maybe an hour from the trailhead, depending on your pace and how many times you stop for breath. It's the sort of walk that appeals to folks who like a bit of graft without needing ropes or technical bits - families with older kids manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland stretch tedious. Serious fell walkers will barely notice it exists.

You'll want to allow a good two hours if you're not rushing, and waterproofs are non-negotiable up here - the weather changes faster than you'd expect. Spring and early autumn are best when the ground's not waterlogged and visibility's halfway decent.

Staying at Highburn House or Riverside Wooler gives you easy access without needing to drive far. It's the sort of walk you'd do as part of a longer Northumberland hill tour rather than a destination in itself, but if you're basing yourself locally and the forecast looks half-promising, it'll do nicely for a morning out.
