About Cold Law
The peak itself is bare and windswept, with trig point marking 675 metres. What strikes you most is the isolation - there's something about being up there, surrounded by rolling moorland and distant farmland, that makes you forget there's a busy world below. The walk takes roughly an hour and a half return from the nearest parking, depending on your fitness and how long you dawdle at the top.
This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young kids might find it hard going, though determined parents have managed it. History buffs won't find castles or ruins here - Cold Law is about landscape and effort, not stories. On a grey day it's bleak and moody; in sunshine it's genuinely spectacular.
If you're based at Highburn House Caravan Park or Riverside Wooler, Cold Law makes a solid half-day outing. Pair it with a potter around Wooler itself or a visit to one of the other Cheviot walks nearby. The wind chill is no joke even in summer, so bring layers and waterproofs. Free to access, and best tackled in decent weather.
