Colagin Hillfort

The ramparts of Colagin Hillfort rise abruptly from the Argyll landscape just outside Oban, offering one of those walks where the effort genuinely pays off. This Iron Age fort sits on high ground with commanding views across the Firth of Lorn - the kind of spot ancient Scots would have chosen precisely because you can see trouble coming from miles away.

It's not a visitor centre with interpretive boards and a shop. What you get is the fort itself - the earthwork defences are still clearly visible if you know what you're looking at, and the views alone make the trek worthwhile. The climb takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest car access, and you're rewarded with a proper sense of how these people lived, perched up here watching the coast.

Walkers and history types will find this genuinely interesting; casual visitors expecting something polished might feel underwhelmed. There's no admission fee because there's no gate - you just go. Allow an hour return trip if you're taking it slow and absorbing the views.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Oban Holiday Park is closest at under two miles, with Tanunda Pods and Maggie's Cabin also within easy reach - gives you a solid base for exploring this stretch of Argyll. The hillfort works well as a morning walk before heading into Oban itself for lunch, or as part of a longer hiking day if you're combining it with other local spots. Worth the detour if archaeology and views matter to you; skip it if you need facilities.
