Coille Mhor National Nature Reserve

The moment you push through the gate at Coille Mhor, you're entering proper woodland - not the manicured sort, but actual native forest where the trees have had time to establish themselves properly. It's a national nature reserve just outside Lochgilphead, and the main draw is straightforward: walking through mature woodland, spotting what wildlife you can, and getting away from the noise of the main road.

What you get depends entirely on what you're after. Keen ornithologists will spend hours tracking calls through the canopy. Families with younger kids might manage an hour or so before legs start complaining. The woodland itself is the attraction - there aren't facilities, visitor centres, or marked trails with interpretive boards. It's just you, the trees, and whatever birds or deer happen to be about.

Go early morning if you want the best chance of seeing anything. Midday in summer and the place goes quiet. Free to access, no gates or barriers - it's a proper reserve, not a tourist operation.

If you're staying at The Pod Over By or Lochgilphead Caravan Park, it's close enough for a morning walk without having to pack the car. Pair it with a walk along Loch Gilp itself if you want something a bit easier on the knees. The reserve is best for people who genuinely enjoy woodland on its own terms - if you need playgrounds or a café, look elsewhere.
