Coed Mair

The forest track at Coed Mair winds through dense woodland just inland from Pentraeth, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of poking around rather than expecting signage and facilities. Bring proper boots - it gets muddy, especially after rain, and the paths aren't manicured. What you get instead is the real thing: ancient oak and conifers, a decent sense of being away from it all, and if you're lucky, a spot of wildlife-watching without the crowds you'd find at more famous nature reserves.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile, particularly those heading to Anglesey for the coastal paths and fancying a day inland. It's not dramatic scenery - no waterfalls or mountain views - but it's proper Welsh woodland, quiet and green. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour, though a short ramble here before heading to the beach at Pentraeth works perfectly as a morning activity.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and snacks. The beauty is that it costs nothing and stays free of tourist infrastructure. If you're staying at somewhere like Llanfair Hall, just six miles away, it's an easy detour when you want to break up a park holiday with an actual walk. Go early to avoid the afternoon crowds, and don't expect it to take more than ninety minutes for a decent circuit. Real woodland, no frills.
