Coed Llwydfaen

The woodland around Coed Llwydfaen feels properly wild - ancient oak and beech mixed with younger conifers, the sort of place where you lose track of time within ten minutes of the car park. It's a genuine forest, not a managed visitor attraction with visitor centres and gift shops, which means you get the real thing: proper walking trails threading through dense woodland on the outskirts of Conwy.

There's no entrance fee and no opening hours to worry about - you rock up, lace your boots, and go. The trails vary wildly in difficulty, so families with young kids can manage the easier, flatter routes without trouble, while serious hikers will appreciate the steeper climbs that give you glimpses of the Conwy Valley when the trees break. Most people allow between one and three hours depending on which path they take.

This works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're staying at Wern Farm Caravan Park or Cefn Cae just down the road - close enough that you're not spending half your day driving. The woodland canopy keeps things cool even on warmer days, and there's something restorative about a proper forest walk after a few days of holiday routine.

Winter's actually decent here; the bare branches let more light through, and the mud's part of the charm. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic if you hit the main trails when half of North Wales has the same idea. Spring brings bluebells in the clearings - genuinely worth planning around if you're flexible with dates.
