Bryn Cŵn

The climb up this unassuming peak just outside Conwy rewards you with proper panoramic views across the Conwy Valley and out towards Anglesey. At 429 metres, Bryn Cŵn isn't going to trouble serious fell walkers, but it's a cracking half-day walk that gets you above the tourist crowds without the commitment of Snowdonia's bigger hills.

From the summit, you'll spot Conwy Castle looking like a toy fortress below, while the Menai Strait stretches out beyond. The path can be a bit boggy in places - decent boots are essential - and there's no waymarking to speak of, so bring a proper map or GPS.

Families with older children who fancy a proper walk will love this. Younger ones might find the unmarked terrain and steady climb a bit much. Allow three hours for the round trip, including time to enjoy those views and maybe a sandwich at the top.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around Conwy puts you right on the doorstep. Wern Farm Caravan Park is closest at just over half a mile, while Conwy Holiday Park and the others give you easy access to both the peak and the historic town below. It's the sort of walk that makes you appreciate why people keep coming back to this corner of Wales.
