Cocklemore Brook

You won't find Cocklemore Brook on many tourist maps, and that's rather the point. This Wiltshire nature reserve near Melksham is the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident - a proper working wetland where the main attraction is simply watching water do what it does best.

The brook itself meanders through grazing meadows and reed beds, drawing in kingfishers, herons, and a decent variety of wildfowl depending on the season. There's no visitor centre or café, no interpretive boards telling you what you're looking at. You show up, walk the paths, and pay attention. Birdwatchers will spend hours here; families with restless kids might find twenty minutes enough.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - there's no car park as such, just pull over where you can without blocking farm gates. Spring and early summer are when it's most active. Autumn brings migrating birds. Winter floods the fields, which sounds grim but actually creates brilliant temporary habitats.

If you're based at Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site or The Moors Campsite nearby, this makes an easy morning detour rather than a destination in itself. It pairs well with a walk around Melksham itself or a longer ramble taking in the broader Avon valley. Not thrilling if you need entertainment, but genuinely lovely if you appreciate the unglamorous side of English wildlife.
