Morass Wood

Morass Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Melksham, the sort of place where you can lose an hour without even trying. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and there's enough shade under the canopy to make it pleasant even on warmer days. It's a fairly low-key affair - no visitor centre, no marked trails with fancy signage - just woodland doing what woodland does.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths are straightforward enough that families with reasonably capable kids won't struggle, though it's muddy after rain so bring decent boots. You're looking at forty-five minutes to an hour if you want a proper explore without rushing. The trees are mature and dense enough to feel properly secluded, even though you're only a couple of miles from the town.

It's the kind of place that works well as a morning outing if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site is closest at 1.6 miles away, or if you fancy something with a bit more comfort, Little Thornham Holidays is only 2.8 miles down the road. Use it to stretch your legs before heading into Melksham proper, or as a gentle warm-up if you're planning longer walks in the area.

There's no charge for entry that I can find, and opening hours aren't really a thing with woodland access. Go early morning if you want it quietest.
