The Warren

The Warren is a proper woodland walk just outside Melksham, the sort of place that feels worlds away from the town itself even though it's barely a ten-minute drive. Once you're in among the trees, you forget about the suburbs entirely. It's managed woodland with good footpaths, nothing too demanding, and the whole thing rewards a slow potter rather than a rushed march through. You'll find yourself among established trees with decent shade, which matters more than you'd think on a hot day.

This works best for walkers who like a bit of peace without needing dramatic views or fell-top struggles. Families with younger kids will manage it fine - no scrambling required - though it's not the sort of place that screams adventure. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Roe Deer Fields, it's worth fitting in as a half-day outing alongside whatever else you've got planned.

Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing. The woodland itself isn't huge, so you won't be trekking for miles. Spring and early autumn are your best bets - winter can get a bit soggy and muddy underfoot, summer sometimes feels cramped and hot between the trees. It's free to access, which is always a bonus, and there's usually somewhere to park without much fuss. Not the headline attraction of the region, but a decent, unpretentious bit of Wiltshire woodland that does what it says on the tin.
