Maples Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Maples Wood sits just outside Melksham and does exactly what it says on the tin - it's full of maples. Come autumn, when the leaves turn, it's genuinely worth the drive. The canopy here is dense enough that even on rainy days you'll stay relatively dry, which matters more than you'd think in Wiltshire.

The woodland floor is soft underfoot and the paths wind through without too much climbing involved. It's the sort of place where you can cover a couple of miles without really noticing, which works brilliantly for families with younger kids who tire easily. There's nothing to "do" in the activity sense - no playground, no visitor centre - so don't expect keeping toddlers entertained. But if you've got school-age children who can manage a gentle ramble, or you're after a spot to clear your head before heading back to the caravan site, it delivers.

Access and timing aren't well signposted online, so ring ahead if you're planning a specific visit. Spring brings bluebells here, though they're less showy than in famous bluebell woods elsewhere. The real magic is October and November.

Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits just 1.9 miles away, making this an obvious add-on to a woodland-focused holiday. It's not dramatic or rare, but it's reliable and genuinely pleasant. Worth combining with other local walks rather than banking an entire afternoon on it.
