Cocked Hat Plantation

The forest floor here is thick with bracken and pine needles, the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of your own footsteps echoing back at you. Cocked Hat Plantation, just outside Worksop, is a working woodland that doesn't announce itself - there's no visitor centre, no café, just trees and the occasional forestry track.

It's genuinely good for a proper walk. The plantation has decent paths threading through mixed woodland, and because it's not a managed tourist attraction, you'll see far fewer people than you would at somewhere like Sherwood Forest. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and it's fine for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground without constant hand-holding.

The whole thing is free, naturally. You can spend anywhere from 45 minutes for a quick loop to three hours if you're the type to stop and identify mushrooms. Spring's rather lovely, autumn even better - the light filtering through the larches is proper atmospheric.

If you're camping at Little Oak or Hallcroft just down the road, this makes an excellent morning or early evening escape without needing to pack the car. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to Nottinghamshire in the first place - quiet, uncommercial, and genuinely useful if you want to tire out restless kids before bed. Don't expect any grand views or heritage plaques. Just bring waterproofs and sensible boots.
