Walking into Cock Wood feels like stepping into something genuinely wild - the kind of Lancashire forest that doesn't announce itself with visitor centres or gift shops. Near Clitheroe, this woodland sprawls across proper ancient woodland, the sort of place where you're more likely to hear birdsong than car engines.

It's a straightforward woodland walk without the crowds you'd fight through elsewhere. The paths wind through decent-sized trees and dense undergrowth, and if you time it right - spring for bluebells, autumn for the colour - it's genuinely worth an hour or two of your time. Families will find it manageable, though it's not a destination for toddlers or anyone after a manicured experience. Serious woodland walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it.

There's no entrance fee or formal opening hours to worry about, which means you can slip in whenever it suits. Allow a good hour to ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly. It's the sort of place where you actually notice what's around you rather than ticking off a list.

For a camping holiday based at one of the Ribble Valley parks - Pendle View, Wigwam Holidays, or Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site are all within easy reach - Cock Wood makes a solid morning out. It's close enough to Clitheroe not to eat petrol, far enough into nature to feel properly away from the caravan park routine. Pair it with a walk along the river, grab lunch in town, and you've got yourself a decent day.
