About Cock Mill Wood
This isn't a manicured forest trail with interpretation boards at every turn. It's genuinely just woodland - which means it rewards a slow wander rather than a quick loop. Families with kids who'll happily disappear into the trees for a couple of hours will love it. Dog walkers, naturally, make good use of it. Serious hikers might find it a bit limited on its own, but it's an excellent buffer if you're basing yourself at one of the three holiday parks within easy reach - Whitby Holiday Park, Broadings Farm, or the top-rated Northcliffe & Seaview are all within two miles.
There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and no fixed opening times either - it's the sort of place you simply go to. Allow two hours for a decent walk if you're actually looking around. Spring's particularly good here when the bluebells come through, though honestly any time between late spring and early autumn will do nicely. Come on a weekday morning if you want real quiet. It pairs well with Whitby's coastal attractions without the tiresome seafront feel.
