Cock Hill

The walk up Cock Hill takes about forty minutes from Greenfield, and it's a straightforward slog rather than a technical climb. You're looking at a modest Pennine peak - nothing that'll have you gasping for Alpine air, but the views across the moorland are decent enough on a clear day. The trig point marks the summit at around 1,500 feet, and from there you can see right across to Winter Hill and beyond towards the larger peaks. It's the sort of walk that works brilliantly if you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park or Deerstone Glamping and want to stretch your legs without committing to anything too ambitious. Families with reasonable fitness will manage it fine; younger kids might find the final push tedious, but there's no scrambling to worry about. The moorland itself has that austere Lancashire feel - heather and gritstone rather than dramatic cliffs. Bring decent boots because the path can get boggy, especially after rain. Allow a couple of hours return if you're not rushing, and go early if the weather looks uncertain because cloud comes in quickly up here. Worth doing as part of a wider Pennine walking holiday rather than a dedicated trip, and it pairs well with Dovestone Reservoir nearby if you want to break up the day.
