Cochran's Dam

The dam itself is a modest Victorian engineering effort that's quietly done its job for well over a century, creating a decent-sized reservoir on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland. You get a proper walk around the water - nothing dramatic, but the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The surrounding woodland is thick enough to feel properly away from things, and there's something satisfying about watching the light change across the water through the trees. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and families with younger kids won't struggle to find a manageable circuit without needing proper fell boots. The walk takes somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on which way you tackle it and how often you stop to sit about. Free, obviously - it's a public amenity, not some private venture. Worth noting it's popular with local runners and cyclists too, so weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends. If you're based at Westgate Caravan & Camping Site just down the road, it's practically on your doorstep and makes for an easy half-day outing without needing to plan much. The dam itself isn't architecturally showy - don't come expecting something Instagram-worthy. But if you want somewhere to clear your head while staying in the area and not driving anywhere, it does exactly what it says on the tin. The surrounding Bishop Auckland countryside is worth exploring more widely anyway, so treat this as part of a bigger wander rather than a destination in itself.
