Cnoc nam Faoileann

The walk up Cnoc nam Faoileann from Oban takes you to a modest peak that rewards the effort with proper coastal views across the Firth of Lorn. It's not a serious mountain - the summit sits at a humble height - but the path itself is straightforward and the perspective you get over Oban bay and towards the islands makes it worth a morning's work.

This is one for walkers rather than casual strollers. Allow a couple of hours return, depending on fitness, and wear decent boots because the ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain. The views justify the mud though. On clear days you can see across to Mull and beyond, and the light changes dramatically throughout the day - I'd recommend going earlier rather than later to avoid the sun in your eyes on the descent.

Families with older kids will get something out of it, though younger ones might find the bog bits tedious. There's no admission charge and no facilities at the top, so bring water and a snack. The nearest caravan parks - Tanunda Pods and Maggie's Cabin are both within a couple of miles of Oban town centre - make this an easy addition to a wider Argyll holiday. If you're staying at Oban Holiday Park, it's on your doorstep practically.

Go early morning or late afternoon when Oban itself is quieter. The peak doesn't take long to do, so combine it with a walk around the town or a boat trip to one of the islands.
