Clough Head

Clough Head sits at 726 metres on the northern edge of the Lake District, just above Keswick - proper fell walking territory without the crowds you'd get scrambling up Helvellyn or Catbells. The summit itself is fairly modest, with cairns marking the top, but the real pull is the walk in. Most people approach from Threlkeld village, tackling a steady climb through moorland that opens up to surprisingly expansive views across the northern fells and down toward Derwentwater.

The route's manageable enough for fell-experienced walkers, though it's not trivial - expect around three hours return depending on your pace and which path you take. Spring and autumn are best, when the weather's more predictable and the light's proper. Winter needs respect here; the exposure can catch you out if visibility drops.

Families with older kids who've done a few peaks will find this satisfying without being brutal. Younger children might find the walk tedious - there's no dramatic views or summit shelter to reward them halfway. History buffs won't find much here; it's a working landscape rather than a site of significance.

If you're based at Threlkeld Hall Caravan Park or Ewe Love Camping Pods - both within two miles - this is a cracking morning walk before breakfast. Castlerigg Hall, closer to Keswick town, gives you more flexibility to combine this with lower-level walks around Derwentwater on easier days. The fell's free, naturally, and you'll need decent boots and a map or GPS. Don't underestimate it just because it's not famous.
