Ancient woodland near Maidstone where you can actually lose yourself without ending up back at the car park within twenty minutes. Civiley Wood feels properly wild - dense canopy, leaf litter underfoot, the sort of place where you remember why people used to be afraid of forests. It's not massive, so don't expect to spend all day here, but it's the real deal if you want something beyond the manicured walking trail experience.

The trees are old enough that you stop checking your phone. There's a decent network of paths threading through, though nothing obvious or signposted - you'll need to pick your route and actually pay attention. Families with young kids will manage fine on a shorter loop; serious walkers might find it a bit compact, but it's worth combining with other spots in the area.

No idea about fees or official opening hours - it reads as the sort of wood where you just turn up and walk. Spring's proper lovely here, all bluebells and new growth. Autumn works too if you're after that moody, quieter vibe. Summer gets thick and humid among the trees.

If you're based at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club just up the road, it's an easy detour before or after exploring the wider Maidstone area. Chegworth Mill Glamping isn't far either, and honestly, a morning walk through proper woodland beats most commercial attractions. Go when it's overcast rather than baking hot - the trees don't breathe well in high summer.
