Cilurnum

The Roman fort at Cilurnum sits right on Hadrian's Wall near Hexham, and what strikes you first is how the landscape hasn't changed much in two thousand years. You're standing where auxiliary soldiers once guarded the northern frontier of the empire, watching the Tyne Valley stretch out below them.

What you actually get here are the remains of the fort itself - low stone walls, the outline of the gates, and if you look carefully, the headquarters building and barracks. The visitor centre has decent finds: pottery, coins, altars left by soldiers who served here. It's not flashy, but it tells a proper story. The site sits directly on the Wall itself, so you can walk the Stone itself while you're there, which adds weight to the whole experience.

This works best for history types and serious walkers. Kids might manage thirty to forty minutes before getting restless, unless they're the sort who like piecing together old ruins. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the Wall walk as well. It's free to wander the actual site, though donations support maintenance.

The real advantage is location. If you're based at Sycamore Glamping Pods just five miles away, you can visit in the morning and still have the afternoon for the Wall walk heading west toward Once Brewed. East Farm Glamping, a bit further out, makes a solid base camp too. Cilurnum doesn't require a full day commitment, which makes it ideal for breaking up a longer holiday in the area.
