Ancient woodland doesn't get much more accessible than this. Church Hill Wood sits just outside Northwich, offering proper old-growth forest without the need for hiking boots or OS maps. The paths wind through mature oak and birch, with enough variety to keep things interesting without being challenging enough to put off families with pushchairs.

Walkers looking for a gentle hour or two will find plenty to appreciate here. The canopy feels properly established - none of that newly planted stuff you get in some Cheshire woods - and there's decent wildlife spotting if you're quiet about it. Spring brings bluebells, though they're not quite spectacular enough to warrant a special trip.

Families staying at nearby parks like Blakemere Holiday Park or Wild Shore Delamere will find this a useful rainy-day alternative when the main attractions feel too exposed. It's close enough to Northwich for a quick detour, but feels properly rural once you're under the trees.

Expect to spend about an hour here unless you're particularly keen on tree identification. The wood isn't massive, but it's well-maintained and offers that proper forest atmosphere that's harder to find than you'd think in this part of Cheshire.
