Childe's Tomb

A moss-covered stone cross sits alone on Dartmoor, marking the spot where a medieval boy supposedly died. Childe's Tomb is one of those attractions that works precisely because it asks more questions than it answers. The legend claims a young nobleman, William Childe, perished here in the 12th century while crossing the moor during a blizzard - locals say he was trying to reach shelter but froze to death. Whether that's true hardly matters; the isolation of the thing is what gets you.

You'll need proper kit and a decent map. This isn't a roadside pull-in - it's a walk into proper moorland, roughly three miles south-west of Tavistock. The surrounding landscape is bleak, rolling, and genuinely atmospheric. On a grey day it feels genuinely eerie; on a bright one it's simply expansive. The tomb itself is small, weathered granite, almost humble given the weight of centuries pressing down on it.

Histor enthusiasts will find this worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring Dartmoor National Park nearby. Casual visitors should manage expectations - you're paying in footwork and time, not money, and there's no café or visitor centre nonsense. Allow two to three hours return depending on your pace and navigation confidence. The moor rewards patience and punishes complacency, so don't venture here in poor visibility or without proper preparation. Kids will either find it genuinely spooky or dull, depending on their appetite for old stories and boggy ground.
