The canal basin at Chichester tells the story of how a Georgian market town connected itself to the sea. What you get is local history done properly: exhibits about the navvies who dug the canal, the merchants who used it, and the slow decline once railways arrived. There are old photographs, artifacts from the waterway's working days, and enough detail to satisfy anyone interested in industrial heritage without being stuffy about it. Kids might find it a bit text-heavy, but families with teenagers keen on history or engineering will appreciate the straightforward storytelling.

The real value, though, is wandering the canal path itself. The walk from the centre into Chichester proper takes about twenty minutes and passes under some lovely old bridges. The water's calm, there are benches for sitting, and it's a proper escape from the main shopping streets just a short stroll away.

Best visited on a dry day when the light's good and the path isn't muddy. Allow an hour including a browse around the centre and a walk along the towpath. Perfect for breaking up a holiday at one of the lakeside parks, and it connects you to what Chichester actually was, beyond the cathedral and Roman walls.
