Chesters Roman Fort Museum

The stone foundations of a Roman cavalry fort sit right here on the North Tyne, and walking through Chesters makes you realise how far the empire's reach actually extended. You're looking at barracks, a commander's house, bathhouse remains - all laid out with enough clarity that you can almost picture legionaries moving between them two millennia ago.

The museum itself holds the finds that make sense of the rubble outside: sculptured stones, inscriptions, bits of jewellery and weaponry. It's genuinely absorbing if you care about how Romans lived on the frontier. Kids will either find it fascinating or boring within twenty minutes - depends entirely on whether you can sell them the stories. History buffs will spend a solid couple of hours here without rushing.

Chesters sits on Hadrian's Wall's line, so it works brilliantly as part of a larger walking trip along the Wall itself. The fort's position on the river is lovely, and the setting feels far less touristy than some of the busier Wall sections. Hexham, just a handful of miles south, is the nearest proper town if you need supplies or a decent pub afterwards.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Sycamore's highly rated, East Farm's more budget-friendly - you could easily slot this in as a half-day stop rather than a full-day commitment. Combine it with a walk along the Wall itself and you've got a proper Roman afternoon sorted.
