Chesters Roman Fort and Museum

The River Tyne cuts through proper Roman archaeology here. Chesters sits right on Hadrian's Wall, and what you get is one of the best-preserved fort layouts in the whole country - so good that you can actually trace where the soldiers lived, trained, and bathed. The stone ruins are substantial enough to walk around for a good hour, working out the geography of ancient military life.

The museum attached does its job well. You'll see finds from the site itself - tools, coins, bits of sculpture - which makes the scattered stones outside suddenly click into place. It's the sort of place where history types will lose a couple of hours happily, while families with younger kids might find thirty minutes of fort-poking enough before moving on.

Hexham is just down the road, so this fits naturally into a Hadrian's Wall tour. If you're staying at Sycamore Glamping Pods or East Farm Glamping, both within six miles, you could easily combine this with other wall sections nearby. The walk down to the river is worth doing too - the light's lovely in late afternoon, and you get a proper sense of why the Romans built here.

Allow two to three hours if you're reading everything. It's free to wander the fort itself, though there's a charge for the museum - fair enough given what's on display. Go early if you want to avoid school groups in summer. The site's exposed, so windproof jacket essential most of the year.
