Chester Castle: Agricola Tower and Castle Walls

The Roman walls that bound Chester's city centre are the real draw here, and they're genuinely impressive when you stop to properly look at them. Walk the full circuit and you've got nearly two miles of sandstone defence that dates back nearly 2,000 years - it's one of Britain's best-preserved Roman fortifications, full stop.

Agricola Tower itself sits at the northern stretch of the walls. It's a squat, sturdy bit of medieval rebuild, nothing fancy, but it gives you a proper sense of how the Romans engineered these things and how later centuries kept reinforcing them. The views across Chester from the wall-top walk aren't dramatic, but they're solid enough - you get a real feel for how the fortress once dominated the settlement.

Historically minded visitors will spend a good hour here, longer if you tackle the entire wall circuit. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes sufficient unless they're already into Roman Britain. It's free and accessible at all hours, which is a plus when you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Fir Trees and Netherwood are both within easy walking distance.
