Westminster Park

Westminster Park sits just across the border in Flintshire, a proper slice of North Wales wetland that punches above its weight if you're staying at one of the caravan parks around Chester. It's a nature reserve - the kind of place where you come to spot birds and soak up quiet rather than for theme park thrills.

The reserve itself is fairly intimate. You're walking through reedbed and wetland habitat, keeping your eyes peeled for warblers, water voles, and if you're lucky, herons. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing that'll knacker you out, and the whole thing takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace. Binoculars are basically essential; without them you'll mostly be looking at reeds wondering what everyone else is photographing.

It works best for serious birdwatchers and keen naturalists rather than families after a day out - young kids will get restless once they've spotted the first duck. That said, if you've got proper nature-loving teenagers, they might find it genuinely interesting. The light is best in early morning or late afternoon when the birds are most active.

Fir Trees Caravan & Lodge Park is barely fifteen minutes away, making Westminster a doddle to slot into a broader Chester area trip. Most of the other parks - Netherwood, Birch Bank Farm, Oakwood Farm - sit within half an hour's drive, so it's an easy add-on without redirecting your whole week. Admission details are frustratingly thin on the ground, so ring ahead before you go. Worth a morning or afternoon, not worth a special trip on its own.
