Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum

The house where Dickens spent his first few years is a proper pilgrimage for anyone who's read Great Expectations or Oliver Twist. It's a small Georgian terrace on a quiet street in Portsmouth, filled with first editions, personal letters, and the sort of period furniture that makes you understand how cramped Victorian life actually was. You're not walking into some vast museum complex - this is intimate, almost domestic. The rooms are arranged to show how the family lived, and there's something oddly moving about standing in the actual space where one of England's greatest writers spent his infancy. Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour here, which is about right. You get the atmosphere without it dragging. History buffs will linger longer, picking through the exhibition details. Families with young kids might find it a bit slow unless they're already Dickens enthusiasts. Lee-on-the-Solent is just along the coast, making this an easy stop if you're staying at one of the holiday parks in the area. Kingfisher Caravan Park is barely four miles away, and Fishery Creek Touring Park - which has excellent reviews - is under six. It pairs well with a seaside break on the Solent, especially if you fancy a quieter corner of the south coast. The museum does charge admission, though it's modest. Best to check opening hours ahead of time as they're fairly restricted. In winter it can close early, and summer Mondays aren't always guaranteed.
