Chapel Fell Top

The walk up Chapel Fell Top from Bishop Auckland is a proper hill rather than a mountain, but that's exactly what makes it work so well. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes up from the car park, steady gradient, nothing technical. The summit sits at 1,391 feet and gives you wide views across Weardale and the North Pennines - on a clear day you can see right across to Cross Fell. It's the sort of walk that feels genuinely rewarding without demanding climbing boots and a packed rope.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The path is well-trodden but not overcrowded, and families with older kids can manage it without drama. Younger children might find the walk a bit long depending on their legs. The fell itself is moorland, quite open and windswept, so bring layers even when it's warm down in town.

There's no visitor infrastructure up there - no cafe, no facilities - so come prepared. It's free to walk, naturally. The best time is spring through early autumn, though October can be magical if you catch a clear day. Winter gets muddy and the weather turns quickly.

If you're based at Westgate Caravan & Camping Site, just 2.7 miles away, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading elsewhere. White House & Hagg Bridge is a bit further at 5.7 miles but still works as a base. Both parks are well-positioned for exploring Weardale and the surrounding fell country, so Chapel Fell Top fits naturally into a few days of proper North Pennines walking.
