Getting to the 635-metre summit of Cefn-trefor-fawr involves a proper hill walk, not some gentle weekend stroll. The ascent from the lanes around Talsarnau rewards you with cracking views across the Dwyryd estuary and out towards Cardigan Bay on a clear day. You'll earn those vistas though - this isn't one for flip-flops and sandwiches.

Serious walkers will appreciate the relatively quiet nature of this Gwynedd peak. While Snowdon gets mobbed, Cefn-trefor-fawr offers genuine solitude and the chance to stretch your legs without fighting for parking or photo spots. The surrounding moorland feels properly wild, with sheep tracks and rocky outcrops marking your route upward.

Families with teenagers who fancy a challenge might enjoy it, but this isn't suitable for young children or anyone expecting waymarked paths and visitor centres. Budget at least three hours for the round trip, longer if you want to savour the summit.

From the holiday parks around Talsarnau and Porthmadog, it makes an excellent day out for keen walkers staying at places like Haven Greenacres or Woodlands Caravan Park. The drive to the starting point takes you through lovely Welsh countryside, and you'll return with that satisfied feeling that comes from earning your views the hard way.
