Cefn Moel

You'll find this summit about twenty minutes' walk from Crickhowell, rising up from the valley floor as a proper standalone peak rather than part of some sprawling range. The climb itself is straightforward - nothing technical, but it does get your legs working on the ascent. The real draw is the view. On a clear day you're looking south over the Brecon Beacons, west across the Black Mountains, and north towards the Wye Valley. It's the sort of viewpoint that makes sense once you're up there, showing you exactly how the landscape fits together.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this one. It's not a scramble or anything technical, so families with older kids can manage it, though the younger ones might find the push up a bit tedious. Plan on an hour to ninety minutes for the round trip depending on fitness. There's no admission charge - just park near Crickhowell and head up.

Best visited on a clear morning, before the cloud rolls in. Midweek is quieter if you prefer solitude. The walk works brilliantly as part of a longer day if you're based at Cwmdu Campsite nearby - they've got proper facilities and it's only a short drive. Pencelli Castle Caravan Park, a bit further out, is also well-regarded if you want something slightly larger. Either base gives you access to decent walking without the Beacons-proper crowds.
