Cave Hill

The walk up Cave Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Ribble Valley - proper expansive stuff that makes the climb feel entirely justified. It's a limestone peak just outside Settle, and the approach is straightforward enough without being tedious.

You'll find cave entrances near the summit, which kids find genuinely thrilling. The excavations are shallow, nothing that demands serious spelunking gear, but they're atmospheric enough. The hill itself is a decent two-to-three-hour round trip from the village, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

This works best for walkers and families with older children - primary school age and up have the legs for it without complaint. History types will appreciate the Bronze Age settlement evidence, though there isn't much to see on the ground itself. The real draw is the walk itself and that view when you reach the summit.

Ribblesdale Pods and Philpin Farm Campsite sit within easy reach, making this a natural half-day excursion from either base. Settle itself has decent cafes where you can refuel afterwards. Go early if you can - the summit catches afternoon mist regularly, and cloudy days rob you of those valley views entirely. Free to visit, naturally, and no time restrictions. It's a proper Yorkshire fell walk without the dramatics.
