Caunce Wood

Caunce Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Rufford in Lancashire - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's not dramatic or famous, but that's rather the point. You get woodland paths that wind through decent-sized trees, plenty of green cover, and a genuine sense of being away from it all without needing to drive for hours.

The walk itself is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the distance tedious depending on which trails you pick. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you want to do it properly rather than just a quick circuit. The ground can be muddy after rain - proper muddy - so wellies are a sensible call. There's nothing fancy here: no visitor centre, no tea room, just woodland.

Historically minded visitors won't find much to chew on, but if you're after a decent leg-stretch between caravan sites like Royal Umpire or Leisure Lakes, it does the job nicely. The forest feels well-maintained without being over-engineered. It works best in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, or autumn when the light filters through properly.

Free to access, as far as anyone can tell - there's no gate or obvious entry fee. The real value is that it's close enough to Rufford for a morning walk without eating into your holiday properly. Not spectacular, but solid and honest.
