Mere Sands Wood Nature Reserve

A flat stretch of woodland and wetland just outside Rufford that's genuinely worth a morning walk if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks. Mere Sands Wood is run by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, and the appeal is straightforward - you get proper woodland paths, a couple of shallow pools where you'll spot waterfowl, and the kind of birding opportunities that have locals returning year after year.

The reserve covers about 100 acres, which sounds generous until you realise most of it can be covered in a leisurely two to three hours. There are waymarked trails through the trees, open enough that you're not battling undergrowth but dense enough to feel like you've escaped the carpark. The pools are the main draw - bring binoculars and you'll spot teal, pintails, and if you're lucky, bitterns in winter. It's the sort of place where you'll see proper birdwatchers with tripods and notebooks, which tells you something.

Families with young children will find it pleasant rather than thrilling - the terrain is easy, but there's not much hands-on activity beyond looking and listening. Keen walkers and nature types, though, will appreciate the quiet. It's free to visit and close enough to Leisure Lakes or Four Seasons Glamping that you could make it a morning outing without much fuss.

Best visited early, before crowds arrive. Winter and spring offer the most bird activity. Worth the detour if you're interested in wetland ecology; skip it if you need dramatic views.
