Spring Wood

Spring Wood is a proper Lancashire woodland just outside Rufford, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's forest in the best sense - tall trees, woodland floor thick with leaves, paths that wind through without feeling managed to death.

Walkers will get the most from this. The woodland offers decent routes for anything from a quick 20-minute stroll to a proper couple-hour ramble, depending on how much you fancy exploring. The ground can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential rather than optional. Kids generally enjoy it if they're the sort who like poking about in trees and spotting birds rather than expecting an adventure playground.

The nearest caravan parks - Leisure Lakes and Four Seasons Glamping are both within three miles - make this a solid addition to a park-based holiday in the area. It's close enough for an easy morning walk without being a major production. Riverside Holiday Park at 3.6 miles away is also handy if you're looking to break up the day between the static van and some actual forest.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are when Spring Wood really works best. Summer can feel a bit thick with insects and humidity, while winter walks are fine if you're equipped for damp. There's no charge to access woodland in England unless it's actively managed as a paid attraction, so expect free entry.

Honestly, it's not a destination in itself. But if you're already camped nearby at one of the parks, half a day here breaks up caravan life nicely.
