Alma Wood

Walking into Alma Wood feels like stepping properly off the beaten track. This Lancashire forest, just outside Croston, is the sort of place locals know about but tourists tend to miss - which is precisely why it's worth the detour.

It's straightforward woodland walking territory. The paths wind through mature trees, and if you time it right - autumn, especially - the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely. Spring brings the woodland floor alive with bluebells. You won't find dramatic vistas or dramatic facilities here; this is quiet forest, the kind where you hear birds and your own footsteps.

Families with younger kids might manage an hour comfortably before the novelty wears thin. Serious walkers and nature photographers will find more to occupy themselves - the density of the trees means you get real seclusion despite being close to Croston. Dog walkers are absolutely catered for; there's nothing restrictive about the place.

No visitor centre, no gift shop, no entrance fee as far as we can tell - and frankly, that's part of its appeal. Just turn up. Wear proper footwear though; Lancashire soil and tree roots don't forgive trainers.

If you're staying at Royal Umpire or Leisure Lakes, both within a few miles, Alma Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon activity between the caravan park and exploring the broader area. It's unpretentious, accessible, and doesn't demand much planning - which sometimes is exactly what a countryside break needs.
