Castle on the Hill

The ruins sit on high ground overlooking Henfield, commanding views across the Sussex Weald that justify the scramble up to reach them. What remains is fragmentary - mostly foundation stones and scattered flint - but enough to sketch out what was once here. Medieval fortification, Anglo-Saxon settlement, or iron age fort depending on which historians you trust. The uncertainty is part of the appeal, really.

Walkers will find it well worth the detour if you're already in the area. The approach from Henfield takes you through proper countryside, and the hilltop itself offers breathing space and genuine views rather than the cramped prospect you get from many southern viewpoints. Allow an hour or so if you're combining it with a walk around the slopes. Bring a decent map though - signage is minimal and mobile signal can be patchy.

History enthusiasts will spend longer picking over what little remains and imagining the settlement layers, but casual visitors might find thirty minutes sufficient. The site itself is free and accessible year-round, though winter mud can make it a boots job. It works well as part of a wider walking circuit if you're staying at Foot of the Downs or Downsview Park - both are close enough for a morning outing before heading to the coast or exploring deeper into the High Weald. Best visited outside school holidays when you'll have the hilltop to yourself.
