West Hill

The South Downs roll on for miles around Henfield, and West Hill is one of those summits that rewards a proper walk without demanding a mountaineer's schedule. You're looking at decent views across Sussex countryside - nothing dramatic, but the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people actually live down here rather than just pass through. The hill itself sits within the Downs' network of footpaths, so reaching it means getting your legs working, not just parking at a car park and strolling five minutes.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The views are genuinely nice on a clear day, rolling fields and tree lines stretching out properly. If you're camping at Foot of the Downs or Downsview Park - both within 3 miles - you've got a straightforward morning or afternoon hike. Kids who are happy on their feet will manage fine; those expecting something more dramatic than open countryside might find it a bit tame. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time and want to soak in the views rather than race to the summit.

It's free, obviously - it's a hill. No facilities up there, so bring water and snacks if you're planning a proper session. Go midweek if you can. Weekends see more foot traffic, and the magic of the Downs is really about having space to think. Works brilliantly as part of a longer Downs walk if you're based at any of the nearby parks - connect it with other routes and you've got yourself a day out.
