Mount Zion

Standing at 235 metres above sea level, this modest chalk downland summit sits quietly between Henfield and the coast, offering surprisingly good views across the Weald without the crowds that swarm the more famous South Downs peaks. The walk up from the nearest road is gentle rather than challenging - think pleasant countryside stroll rather than proper hike.

From the top you'll get decent views north towards the Surrey Hills on a clear day, though the southern outlook towards the sea is partially blocked by trees. Families with younger children will manage the ascent easily enough, and it's the sort of spot where you can have a proper picnic without feeling like you're on display.

The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no trig point or dramatic cliff edges here - but that's rather the point. It's a proper peaceful spot for those who want a bit of elevation without the faff of tackling Ditchling Beacon or the Seven Sisters.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Foot of the Downs or Southdown Way, it makes for a decent morning walk before the day gets too hot. Allow an hour and a half round trip from the nearest parking. Best visited on weekdays when you'll likely have the whole hilltop to yourself.
