About Castle Crag
What makes it special is the Iron Age fort at the top. There's not much left physically, but standing where ancient people stood, looking out over Derwentwater and the valleys beyond, gives the whole thing a sense of purpose. It's not just another peak bagging exercise. The paths are well-maintained and clearly marked, which helps when you're clambering through the trees.
Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine - the steep bit is mercifully short. Walkers who like a bit of history mixed in with their exercise will absolutely love it. That said, if you're after an easy amble, this isn't it. The payoff is genuine though: on a clear day, the view across to Catbells and down towards Grange is properly excellent.
It's free, naturally, and works brilliantly as a half-day excursion from Keswick itself or from any of the nearby parks like Castlerigg Hall or Threlkeld Hall. Allow ninety minutes return if you're not rushing, and aim for afternoon when the light's best. The crowds thin out after two o'clock, which matters on a summer's day.
