Castle Close

There's not much left standing at Castle Close, but that's rather the point. This Iron Age hillfort sits on high ground just outside Tiverton, and what draws you here isn't the remains themselves - which are mostly earthworks and ditches at this stage - but the walk and the views across Devon that justify the climb.

The site consists of a series of defensive banks and ditches that would have enclosed a settlement around 2,500 years ago. You're essentially walking the perimeter of ancient life, tracing what people once considered worth defending. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of imagination and a decent map reading skill.

Walkers will get more from this than casual visitors. If you're hoping for reconstructions or visitor facilities, look elsewhere. This is bare bones archaeology - proper raw. The nearest parking and facilities are back in Tiverton itself, so factor in a proper outing rather than a quick stop. Allow a couple of hours if you want to take your time and actually see the full layout of the defences.

It works well as part of a walking holiday around Tiverton. Pair it with other local trails and you've got a decent day out. If you're staying at Nirvana Glamping nearby, it's close enough for a morning expedition before heading elsewhere. History enthusiasts and fell walkers will find it worthwhile. Families with young kids might find it a bit abstract - there's nothing to touch or explore directly, just landscape and earthworks.
