Castcliffe Hill

The walk up Castcliffe Hill near Horncastle is brief but satisfying - you're looking at maybe twenty minutes from the car park, and the climb itself is gentle enough that you won't arrive sweating through your shirt. What makes it worth the trip is the view across the Lincolnshire Wolds once you're up there. On a clear day you can see for miles, which in this part of the world actually means something because the landscape sprawls rather than huddles.

It's not a dramatic peak - this is England's Midlands, after all, not the Pennines - but that's rather the charm. Walkers will appreciate the accessibility; families with younger children will manage it without complaint. History types might find themselves drawn to the Wolds' gentle contours, though there's not much in the way of interpretation on site.

The real appeal lies in combining it with a stay at one of the nearby camps. Oxcombe Campsite and Lincolnshire Glamping are both within spitting distance and rated brilliantly by previous visitors, which makes sense - you get your creature comforts sorted and then spend your days wandering the Wolds properly. Three Horseshoes Campsite, a bit further out, gives you another solid option if the closer ones are full.

Allow an hour or so if you're dawdling and taking photos. Weather permitting, it's a proper tonic for the lungs - straightforward, unpretentious, and exactly what you need from a Lincolnshire outing.
